How to Compare Matchmaking Contract Cancellations and Refunds
SingleMale.net has no paid relationships with the providers mentioned on this page.
If you travel for work, share custody or need a pause, cancellation and hold language can matter more than the headline price. Compare those terms before choosing a package.
If you compare matchmaking firms on price alone, you can easily buy the wrong service. In wireless, I spent decades reading business agreements where two offers looked similar until you calculated the commitment, credits and cancellation terms. The real comparison was always the agreement, not the headline number.
State cancellation rights: check the law, not just the refund clause
These laws apply to specified types of dating or social-referral contracts. Coverage depends on where the transaction occurs, what service is sold, the provider's business model, and statutory exceptions. This is a checklist for verifying rights, not a finding that any named matchmaker is breaking a law.
California — three business days, plus contract-term limits
California Civil Code §1694.1 generally gives a buyer of a covered dating-service agreement until midnight of the third business day after signing to cancel; its text calls for a refund within ten days after cancellation notice is received. §1694.2 generally limits payments/financing to two years and service duration to a period beginning within six months and ending within three years, subject to an exception for certain online dating agreements. §1694.1 text · §1694.2 text. Ask the provider which provisions it believes apply to your contract.
New York — notice, referral obligations, holds, and exceptions
New York General Business Law §394-c specifies a three-business-day fee-free cancellation right after receipt of the written contract for covered social-referral agreements and requires a Dating Service Consumer Bill of Rights. Subdivision 2 sets a $1,000 price cap and two-year term limit for covered non-exempt contracts, with an exception for qualifying online dating agreements whose initial and subsequent terms are each no more than one year and whose higher price is reasonable for the service. Subdivision 5-a provides a unilateral written-request membership hold of up to one year. Subdivision 4 addresses refunds when required referrals are not supplied for two successive months, subject to the statute's permitted fee calculation and exceptions. Read §394-c. Do not assume the $1,000 limit applies to every private matchmaking package.
Connecticut — written three-day cancellation notice
Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection says a covered social-referral service contract can be canceled within three days of signing by written notice sent by certified or registered mail to the seller at the contract address. The contract must include a Notice of Cancellation. Connecticut DCP guidance.
Colorado — written cancellation and ten-day refund
Colorado Revised Statutes §6-1-731 provides a three-business-day cancellation window for covered dating-service contracts and generally requires refund of payments within ten days after receipt of cancellation. Online cancellation methods have specific rules. Colorado statute, Title 6.
Florida — official guidance; individual coverage still requires checking
The Florida Attorney General says purchasers of certain future services rendered on a continuing basis can have a three-business-day cooling-off period, with a twenty-day refund deadline. That guidance does not establish that every matchmaking contract automatically qualifies. Before relying on it, ask which Florida statutory provision covers the specific transaction and get advice for a disputed contract. Florida Attorney General guidance. Fla. Admin. Code R. 2-18.002 defines a “contract for future consumer services” as a contract providing consumer services in the future on a continuing basis. Whether that rule covers any particular matchmaking contract remains unconfirmed.
Ask on every call: "Which state's law governs this agreement? What mandatory cancellation, hold and refund rights apply? Where are those rights explained in writing?" A provider's choice-of-law clause is not proof it can waive every mandatory consumer protection.
Laws and official agency explanations checked October 24, 2026. Don't compare starting prices without scope
Here is what the companies actually publish:
VIDA guarantee detail: VIDA says its elite package includes at least five approved dating opportunities in three months or continued search without additional cost. It also says clients may decline up to two of every three proposals. Check the signed Service Agreement for what happens after a rejection. VIDA package description.
| Provider | Public pricing | What the number does not tell you |

| VIDA Select | From $1,695/month; results-guaranteed programs $6,000+. Start with six contract columns
Put every proposal into the same table. Do not use whatever comparison format the sales representative gives you.
| Column | What to record |
|---|---|
| 1. Total spend | Upfront payment, monthly fee, add-ons and taxes |
| 2. Term | Signed date, active-search start date and end date |
| 3. Included service | Candidate recruiting, screening, profiles, approvals and date coordination |
| 4. Qualified delivery | Exact number and definition of completed introductions |
| 5. Failure remedy | What happens if the count or timeline is missed |
| 6. Exit | Notice deadline, refund calculation, renewal and disputes |
A contract that costs less but allows unlimited billing can carry more exposure than a limited fixed package. A costly fixed package may still be poor value if a “match” is counted before anyone agrees to meet.
Read refund language with the package attached
The most concrete published example I found is VIDA Select's terms, revised April 2, 2026. They say the signed Service Agreement controls the fees, payment schedules and refund provisions of the specific package. They also distinguish among packages:
- U.S. deposits: A request to cancel the deposit must be made within three business days of payment. The company then provides a form; if the initial request was timely, the customer has 24 hours after receiving the form to complete and return it for a full deposit refund under the published policy.
- Premium Guarantee Package: Described in the public terms as non-cancellable once signed, subject to the specific guarantee/refund provisions of the Service Agreement.
- Monthly subscription: Cancellation and possible automatic renewal are governed by the Service Agreement. The public terms say a mistaken renewal reported within 48 hours of the charge can receive a courtesy refund, even though processed renewals are otherwise non-refundable.
- Other packages: Their own Service Agreements control.
Those details are not interchangeable. A deposit refund window does not mean every signed package has a three-day free cancellation period. VIDA Terms, section 6.
For Tawkify, Three Day Rule and Selective Search, I could verify current public pricing or service descriptions, but not a complete, universally applicable customer refund schedule from their public pages. Mark those refund cells UNCONFIRMED until the representative supplies the exact agreement. Never fill blanks with review-site guesses.
What is a match, legally and operationally?
The commercial point is straightforward. A company might count a candidate as delivered when a profile is shown, when both parties approve, when contact details are exchanged or only after the date occurs. Each definition changes value.
Ask: “If you recommend someone who lives too far away, doesn't meet the age range we agreed to, or decides not to meet, does that use one of my introductions?” Get the answer written into the contract or referenced policy.
Also ask who can modify preferences during service. If the firm requires you to widen your criteria or travel farther to preserve a guarantee, that restriction should be visible before payment.
How to compare a month-to-month option with a fixed package
Use a cost exposure calculation, not a slogan:
Estimated financial exposure = required upfront fees + expected recurring fees + foreseeable extras + cancellation charges.
Effective cost per completed introduction = total paid ÷ completed introductions.
Do not use “matches proposed” as your denominator if your goal is actual dates. And do not treat a short contract as automatically better: a monthly plan that produces no acceptable candidates is still money spent.
For a three-month trial, write down what would convince you to continue. Set a calendar reminder before the next billing date, and verify whether notice has to be delivered through a particular email, form or portal.
Terms I would negotiate or clarify
Start-of-service clause: I want to know whether paid time begins before the company starts recruiting.
Minimum activity clause: I want a reporting cadence and a reasonable timeline for the first qualified candidate, even where a fixed date cannot be guaranteed.
Definition clause: I want a mutually acceptable, countable introduction clearly defined.
Pause clause: For business travel or a promising relationship, I want to know whether the clock stops and for how long.
Cancellation clause: I want the exact process, notice date and unused-service treatment.
Privacy clause: I want to know who has my information, where the firm shares it and what remains after termination.
If the firm will not negotiate, that's its choice. You can still decide whether the published contract is acceptable; you just should not invent protection that is not there.
Compare providers on verified documents, not the sales call
Here's the rating system I'd use on each written proposal:
- Clear: The contract names the commitment, countable deliverables, dates and remedies.
- Questionable: The terms use undefined wording or refer to outside policies you haven't received.
- Unacceptable for me: Refunds, cancellation or the countable definition of service cannot be explained in writing.
This is not a finding about any company until you review its actual agreement. It is the standard I would apply to every company.
Download the consultation worksheet and review the 30-day matchmaker scorecard before authorizing payment.
Questions readers actually ask
Is a nonrefundable service contract necessarily illegal?
No conclusion can be drawn from that label alone. Enforceability can depend on the facts and applicable law. Read the actual language and obtain legal advice for a major obligation or dispute.
Is a “guarantee” a guarantee of finding a partner?
Do not assume so. Ask for the measurable promised outcome, qualification rules, deadline and exact remedy.
Can a representative's email change a contract?
Potentially only if the agreement and applicable law allow it. Don't depend on a sales email when the signed document says something else; request a signed amendment or written contractual confirmation.
